Good to see teens giving back through Catholic Charities program July 15, 2009 - The Times-Picayune
Letter to the Editor
Re: "Faith goes to work: A Catholic Charities program helps teens learn how they can ease the world's hurts," Metro, July 8.
It was especially gratifying to read Bruce Nolan's article about Catholic Charities' SERVE Camp. We hear too often about young people headed down the wrong path, and we are served up daily images and stories that show 16- and 17-year-olds who seem to have lost their moral compass.
How wonderful to see a group of kids eager to give back and willing to spend this long, hot summer engaged in helping the poor. How wise of our Catholic schools to require that young people connect what they learn in their religion classrooms with action in our neighborhoods. How conscientious of Catholic Charities to provide them a forum in which to do this.
As the mother of a current Mount Carmel student and a former Brother Martin student, I commend not only the students involved, (God bless them!) but Catholic Charities for providing this opportunity and The Times Picayune for covering this good work.
